The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup plain dry bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne), or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 2 medium onions, peeled and sliced 3/8-inch thick (about 10 ounces)
  • 2 egg whites

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 450F. Coat a large nonstick baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.

  • Step 2: Combine bread crumbs, cornmeal, chili powder, red pepper and salt in a medium shallow dish; mix well. Stir in butter and water.

  • Step 3: Separate onion slices into rings.

  • Step 4: Place egg whites in a large bowl and beat lightly. Add onion rings and toss lightly to coat evenly.

  • Step 5: Transfer to bread crumb mixture; toss to coat evenly.

  • Step 6: Place in single layer on baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until onions are tender and coating is crisp.
