Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour, unsifted
  • 1 cup rye flour, unsifted
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, to taste (start with 1/4 teaspoon)
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups buttermilk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Grease and flour a 2 quart mold, coffee can, pressure cooker insert or a Rival Bread 'N Cake Bake Pan.(Smaller cans take less time to cook, check sooner)

  • Step 2: Combine flours, cornmeal, baking soda and salt. Stir in molasses and buttermilk.

  • Step 3: Transfer batter into mold, cover tightly.

  • Step 4: Place on trivet or rack in deep kettle.

  • Step 5: Add enough boiling water to kettle so that the water reaches half-way up the sides of the mold.

  • Step 6: Cover and steam for 3 1/2 hours, or until done.

  • Step 7: Remove from mold to cake rack.

  • Step 8: Serve hot with baked beans.
