  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 ounces bacon
  • 3 cups onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 15 ounces tomatoes, crushed (1 can)
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, torn
  • 2 ounces parmesan cheese, shaved

How to Make

  • Step 1: Place the oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add the bacon and onions.

  • Step 2: When the onions begin to turn golden add the chile pepper flakes, dried basil, tomatoes and a pinch of salt.

  • Step 3: Cook the sauce for about 15 minutes until the flavors are nicely combined.

  • Step 4: Meanwhile, cook bucatini pasta in heavily salted boiling water until al dente.

  • Step 5: Drain saving 1/2 cup pasta water.

  • Step 6: Toss the pasta with the sauce.

  • Step 7: Add basil and pasta water.

  • Step 8: Cook until thickened.

  • Step 9: Sprinkle generously with cheese.
