Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: Position rack in center of oven.
Step 3: Grease and flour a 9-by-5-inch or 8 ½-by 4 ½-inch loaf pan.
Step 4: In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and add nuts.
Step 5: In another bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
Step 6: Beat in eggs one at a time.
Step 7: Blend in mashed bananas.
Step 8: Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately beating until batter is smooth.
Step 9: Pour batter into prepared pan.
Step 10: Bake in preheated oven 1 hour or until golden and tests done with a toothpick.
