Step 1: Rinse the lentils.
Step 2: In a large, heavy pot, combine the lentils, broth, onion, celery, carrot, and garlic.
Step 3: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer covered, until the vegetables are just tender, about 30 minutes.
Step 4: Add the bell pepper, potato, tomato sauce, curry powder, basil, salt, and black pepper to taste.
Step 5: Continue to simmer until potato is cooked, about 15 minutes more.
Step 6: Check seasoning for taste.
