  • 2 cups rye flour
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds ,hull less
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • Topping
  • 2 tablespoons oatmeal

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F

  • Step 2: Combine the flours, baking powder, salt, baking soda, caraway seeds, sunflower seeds, and brown sugar in a large bowl.

  • Step 3: Mix the egg with the buttermilk and stir into the dry ingredients just to blend.

  • Step 4: Dust the counter with oatmeal flakes.

  • Step 5: Turn out dough and knead about 10 times to cover with flakes and form a round ball.

  • Step 6: Place on buttered Pam sprayed cookie sheet

  • Step 7: Cut a cross lightly on top of loaf and bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom
