  • 2 cups wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F

  • Step 2: Mix the flour salt and cream of tartar together

  • Step 3: Cut in shortening

  • Step 4: Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into about 3/4 cup of warm water.

  • Step 5: Stir and add to the dry ingredients to make a dough.

  • Step 6: If more water is needed, add a little at a time until the dough is the right consistency.

  • Step 7: Pat out on floured board and cut out

  • Step 8: Heat bacon grease in a skillet

  • Step 9: Place cut out biscuits in skillet

  • Step 10: Bake these biscuits at 450 for 12 to 14 minutes or until lightly browned.
