Step 1: Peel and slice the rutabagas and place in a saucepan. Cover with water.
Step 2: Add the sugar, salt, and pepper.
Step 3: Bring to a boil then lower the heat and cover and cook over medium heat for about 1 hour, until they are tender enough to mash.
Step 4: Drain through a collander. Add 1//2 cup bacon drippings and mash with a potato masher. Serve hot.
