Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • CRUST:
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon solid shortening
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • FILING:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 - 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder or taco seasoning or combination (use more or less of the amount of seasoning to your liking)
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (or more to your liking)
  • 16 ounces can kidney beans
  • 6 ounces can tomato paste
  • TOPPING:
  • 1/2 to 1 cup taco cheese (or more depending how cheesy you like it)
  • 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium finely chopped tomato

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease and flour bottom and sides of 9 inch metal or 10 inch glass pie pan. In bowl combine all crust ingredients. Stir until blended (batter will be slightly lumpy). Spread batter thinly on bottom and thickly up sides to within 1/4 inch of pan rim.

  • Step 2: In skillet, brown ground beef. Add onion and cook until tender. Drain off fat. Stir in remaining ingredients and taste for seasoning. Spoon into crust. Bake 20-30 minutes until crust is deep golden brown. Top with cheese a few minutes before taking out. Sprinkle lettuce and tomato on. Server with sour cream or some Mexican style crema and hot sauce. Serves 6.
