Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 1/2 cups water,warm
  • 2 tablespoons dry yeast
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons shortening ,melted
  • 4 cups flour
  • Filling:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper,to taste
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1⁄4 pound american cheese, grated

How to Make

  • Step 1: Combine water yeast, sugar

  • Step 2: Let proof a few minutes.

  • Step 3: Add shortening and half of flour, blending well.

  • Step 4: Knead in the rest of the flour and salt until you have a firm dough.

  • Step 5: Place in a covered, greased bowl and let rise in a warm spot while you prepare filling.

  • Step 6: Filling:

  • Step 7: Brown hamburger meat with chopped onions.

  • Step 8: Drain fat.

  • Step 9: Add mustard, mayonnaise, cheese, salt and pepper to taste

  • Step 10: Mix well.

  • Step 11: Set aside to cool.

  • Step 12: Prepare Burgers:

  • Step 13: Roll out dough and cut rounds using a

  • Step 14: 2 pound coffee can.(I'm using a large tomato juice can)

  • Step 15: Place 3 tablespoons meat mixture on top.

  • Step 16: Fold dough over and seal edges.( It's going to look like a hand pie)

  • Step 17: You can stretch dough around meat to seal (dough does not break as pie dough does).

  • Step 18: Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and let rise 30 minutes or so.

  • Step 19: (Cover with a warm damp dish towel to keep crust from drying out.).

  • Step 20: Bake at 350 degrees until lightly browned (less brown if you plan to freeze and bake later). Check at 15 minutes
