  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 degrees

  • Step 2: Mix together all the dry ingredients

  • Step 3: Add enough buttermilk to form a nice soft dough.(have 2 cups of buttermilk handy )

  • Step 4: Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead lightly.

  • Step 5: Form dough into a circle.

  • Step 6: On greased baking sheet.

  • Step 7: The dough should be about 1 1/2 to 2 inches high.

  • Step 8: Cut a cross 1/2 inch deep over the top with a floured knife.

  • Step 9: This helps bread cook more evenly.

  • Step 10: Bake in preheated 400 degrees F. oven for 40 minutes (or until loaf sounds hollow when rapped lightly on the base with the knuckles).

  • Step 11: Remove bread from pan

  • Step 12: Cool on a wire cake rack.

  • Step 13: Bread should not be cut until it firms up
