  • 8 ounces dried navy beans
  • 8 ounces smoked ham hock
  • 6 cups water
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 leek,chopped
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 8 ounces potatoes,peeled,diced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour

How to Make

  • Step 1: Soak beans overnight

  • Step 2: Drain

  • Step 3: Add water to cover

  • Step 4: Add ham hock which you have studded with several cloves

  • Step 5: Add leeks

  • Step 6: Simmer 1 hour

  • Step 7: Add potatoes

  • Step 8: Simmer 1 more hour adding more water as needed

  • Step 9: At end of cooking brown

  • Step 10: Butter and flour until almost burnt

  • Step 11: Add seasonings

  • Step 12: Add some bean water

  • Step 13: Pour into beans

  • Step 14: Cook until thickened

  • Step 15: Season to taste
