Step 1: Prepare grill for cooking.
Step 2: Heat butter with garlic and salt over moderate heat, stirring, until melted.
Step 3: Transfer to a bowl and cool.
Step 4: Stir in parsley and pepper to taste.
Step 5: Brush cut sides of bread with half of garlic butter.
Step 6: Grill bread, cut sides down, 5 to 6 inches over glowing coals 2 minutes.
Step 7: Turn bread over and brush with remaining garlic butter.
Step 8: Grill until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes more.

Step 10: Herb-garlic butter can be prepared 1 day ahead and chilled, covered. Melt before proceeding.
