Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR CRUMBLE TOPPING
  • 185 grams all-purpose flour (1 1/4 cups)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 125 grams butter (4 ounces or 1 stick)
  • 3/4 cup caster sugar (I ysed 1/2 cup)
  • FOR APPLE FILLING
  • 700-900 grams apples (granny smith apples, or use a combination of granny smith and royal gala 5 apples stipulated)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (I only used 1 teaspoon)
  • FOR BASE
  • 100 grams butter
  • 1/2 cup caster sugar (I used a 1/4 cup)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon milk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 160C (320F).

  • Step 2: Grease and line a 20 x 30 cm slice pan.

  • Step 3: To make the crumble: mix the flour, baking powder, and sugar in a bowl and rub in the butter until it resembles fresh breadcrumbs.

  • Step 4: To make the apple filling: peel and chop apples and place all ingredients into a saucepan and cook over low heat for 10 minutes, or until softened and then allow to cool.

  • Step 5: To make the base: combine the butter and sugar in an electric mixer and beat until creamy and then add the egg and beat well and now fold through the flour, baking powder, and milk.

  • Step 6: Spread the base in the bottom of prepared pan and top with apple filling, and then spoon over the crumble topping and bake in oven for 40 – 50 minutes or until golden.

  • Step 7: Serve dusted with icing (confectioners) sugar.
