Step 1: In a bowl
Step 2: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar.
Step 3: Cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
Step 4: In a small bowl, beat egg and milk; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; roll to 1/2" thickness.
Step 5: Cut with a 2 1/2" biscuit cutter.
Step 6: Bake at 400º for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
