Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR CAKE
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons oil (cooking oil)
  • 1/2 cup nuts, if desired
  • FOR SAUCE
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cup water, boiling

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

  • Step 2: Mix together the flour, white sugar, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder in a large bowl.

  • Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together the milk, vanilla & cooking oil.

  • Step 4: Stir the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients with a heavy spoon. If using nuts, stir them in now.

  • Step 5: Spread this batter mixture into the baking pan; it's not necessary to spread it completely across the bottom of the pan.

  • Step 6: Mix together the brown sugar & cocoa powder. Pour in the boiling water, whisking together to combine completely.

  • Step 7: Pour the sauce mixture gently over the batter.

  • Step 8: Bake in the preheated oven, for 30 minutes.

  • NOTE: It is wise to put a cookie sheet or a larger baking pan underneath the pan, because it will likely boil over as it bakes.
