Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled but not refrigerated (= 3 squares)
  • 1⅓ cups sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Mix flour, soda, and salt.

  • Step 2: Cream butter, and gradually add sugar, beating in until light and fluffy.

  • Step 3: Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.

  • Step 4: Blend in chocolate.

  • Step 5: Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, a little at a time, beating after each addition.

  • Step 6: Add vanilla (and nuts if desired) and mix in.

  • Step 7: Pour into 2 greased and floured 9"x5" loaf pans.

  • Step 8: Bake at 350' F. about 60 minutes or till cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean.

  • Step 9: Cool 10 minutes, then remove from pans and finish cooling on racks.

  • Step 10: Top with glaze if desired. Garnish with chopped nuts to taste.
