  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2/3 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven 375 degrees

  • Step 2: Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together.

  • Step 3: Cream shortening

  • Step 4: Slowly beat in sugar, egg yolks and vanilla extract.

  • Step 5: Add cocoa mixed in boiling water that has cooled to lukewarm and flour mixture alternately with milk.

  • Step 6: Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

  • Step 7: Pour into 2 greased 8 inch layer cake tins.

  • Step 8: Bake for 25 minutes at 375 degrees F, or use greased 9-inch square tin, baking for 45 minutes at 350 degrees F.
