Step 1: In a bowl combine sugar and shortening and then add the remaining ingredients (-baking powder), blending with a wooden spoon but may have to finish blending the ingredients with your hands as the dough is stiff. Form the dough into a roll about 2 inches in diameter and wrap in plastic wrap and chill for one hour.
Step 2: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 3: Using a knife slice the dough into 1/4 inch slices and place them on a cookie sheet. With your finger make a small depression in the center of each cookie and then bake them for 20-30 minutes.
Step 4: Store cookies in a tightly covered container and then they will keep for one week.
