Step 1: Line an 8 inch square pan with foil, grease foil.
Step 2: Mix sugar and milk in a heavy saucepan.
Step 3: Add butter and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
Step 4: Without stirring, boil vigorously for 5 minutes.
Step 5: Remove from heat.
Step 6: Add chips and vanilla.
Step 7: Stir, then whisk until chips melt and mixture is smooth.
Step 8: Stir in almonds and cherries; spread in prepared pan.
Step 9: Refrigerate 6 hours, until firm.
Step 10: Invert pan, peel off foil and cut into 1 inch squares.
