Step 1: In a bowl combine first 3 ingredients (-vinegar) and let stand at room temperature until onion softened, tossing occasionally (2 hours or cover and chill for up to one day).
Step 2: In a skillet combine turkey, barbecue sauce and broth over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low; simmer until heated through, stirring often (5 minutes).
Step 3: Arrange bottoms of buns on plates. Spoon turkey mixture onto buns and using tongs, pile pickled-onion mixture atop turkey. Cover with top halves of buns.
