Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 pounds apples (5 apples)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup water, hot
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup nuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light molasses
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Coat an 8x12x2-inch pan with the 2 tablespoons of butter.

  • Step 2: Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the butter.

  • Step 3: Peel, core and slice apples.

  • Step 4: Arrange apples slices over the sugar mixture.

  • Step 5: Sprinkle nuts over all.

  • Step 6: Place pan on the bottom shelf of oven and let apples cook while mixing the other ingredients.

  • Step 7: Cream together butter and sugar, add egg and molasses and mix well.

  • Step 8: Sift dry ingredients and stir in to creamed mixture.

  • Step 9: Put in hot water and mix to a thin batter.

  • Step 10: Remove pan from oven and pour batter over apples.

  • Step 11: Return to oven and bake for 35 minutes.

  • Step 12: Remove from oven and loosen cake around edges.

  • Step 13: Let stand five minutes and turn out on to serving tray.
