Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oven to 375 .

  • Step 2: Mix well shortening, sugar, egg, flavorings. Mix flour, salt and stir in.

  • Step 3: Divide dough in half.

  • Step 4: Blend red food coloring into one half.

  • Step 5: Roll 1 tsp each color dough on lightly floured board into a strip about 4″ long.

  • Step 6: Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like a rope.

  • Step 7: Put on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top down for handle of cane.

  • Step 8: Bake 9 minutes, or until lightly browned.

  • Step 9: Remove while still warm, sprinkle with mixture of 1/2 cup crushed peppermint stick candy and 1/2 cup sugar.
