  • 1 egg, separated
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oven to 350

  • Step 2: Mix butter, shortening, sugar, egg yolks and vanilla

  • Step 3: Work in flour and salt until dough holds together

  • Step 4: Shape by teaspoonfuls into 1-inch balls

  • Step 5: Beat egg whites slightly,

  • Step 6: Dip each ball into egg whites then roll in nuts

  • Step 7: Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet and press thumb deeply into center of each ball

  • Step 8: Bake 10 minutes or until light brown

  • Step 9: Immediately remove from baking sheet

  • Step 10: Fill thumbprints with jam or jelly
