  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 egg whites
  • Icing:
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 3 cups icing sugar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup hazelnuts, finely chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oven to 350 degress.

  • Step 2: Grease and flour 2 round layer pans

  • Step 3: Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, mixing well

  • Step 4: Add shortening, milk and vanilla, mixing just until combined

  • Step 5: In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form

  • Step 6: Carefully fold egg whites into cake batter in two stages

  • Step 7: Pour into pan(s).

  • Step 8: Bake oblong 35 to 40 minutes, layers 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool.

  • Step 9: Blend all icing ingredients until smooth.

  • Step 10: Use icing for filling layer and icing cake
