Step 1: Heat oven to 350 degress.
Step 2: Grease and flour 2 round layer pans
Step 3: Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, mixing well
Step 4: Add shortening, milk and vanilla, mixing just until combined
Step 5: In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form
Step 6: Carefully fold egg whites into cake batter in two stages
Step 7: Pour into pan(s).
Step 8: Bake oblong 35 to 40 minutes, layers 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool.
Step 9: Blend all icing ingredients until smooth.
Step 10: Use icing for filling layer and icing cake
