Step 1: Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: Grease and flour 2 round layer pans.
Step 3: Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, mixing well.
Step 4: Add shortening, milk and vanilla, mixing just until combined.
Step 5: In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Step 6: Carefully fold egg whites into cake batter in two stages.
Step 7: Pour into pan(s).
Step 8: Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool.
