Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Filling:
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Topping:
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
  • Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oven to 350 degrees

  • Step 2: Grease and flour two layer pans, 9 or 8 inch pans.

  • Step 3: Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix well. Pour into prepared baking pan(s).

  • Step 4: Bake 40 - 45 min for rectangle cake, 30 - 35 for layer cake, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

  • Step 5: To make filling, stir together sugar, cornstarch and salt in a saucepan

  • Step 6: Add water

  • Step 7: Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and boils

  • Step 8: Boil and stir 1 minute

  • Step 9: Remove from heat and stir in butter. Cool

  • Step 10: For Glaze: Heat all ingredients over low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate is melted

  • Step 11: Cool slightly

  • Step 12: To assemble: Top bottom layer with filling and sprinkle with nuts

  • Step 13: Top with second layer

  • Step 14: Spread chocolate glaze over top of cake
