  • 2 3/4 cup cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • FOR FROSTING
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 4 1/2 cups icing sugar
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons liqueur (orange liqueur or orange juice)
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Step 2: Grease and flour 3 8-inch layer pans.

  • Step 3: Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix well.

  • Step 4: Pour into prepared baking pan(s).

  • Step 5: Bake 30 - 35 min, or until toothpick. inserted in center comes out clean.

  • Step 6: To make Icing combine all ingredients and beat until smooth

  • Step 7: To assemble, level cake layers and fill and frost with icing.

  • Step 8: Decorate top with orange peel curls, or candied orange slices
