Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or cake flour)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate (melted)
  • FOR FILLING
  • 1 1/2 cup whipping cream (chilled)
  • 1/4 cup icing sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 can (540 ml) cherry pie filling

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Step 2: Grease and flour 2 9 inch pans.

  • Step 3: Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix well.

  • Step 4: Pour into prepared baking pans.

  • Step 5: Bake 30 - 35 for layer cake, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean

  • Step 6: Whip whipping cream with icing sugar and almond extract, until stiff peaks form.

  • Step 7: To assemble, use a decorators tube to pipe a thin rim around the edge of bottom layer.

  • Step 8: Fill the center of the bottom layer with half of the cherry filling and top with second layer.

  • Step 9: With the decorator tube, pipe the outline of a large heart in the center of the top of the cake.

  • Step 10: Fill heart in with remaining cherry pie filling.

  • Step 11: Ice remainder of cake with remaining whipped cream.
