Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup water, warm
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 egg yolk (reserve white)
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup almond nuts (blanched, chopped)
  • 1/4 cup citron
  • 1/4 cup candied cherries (chopped)
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoons grated lemon peel
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • FOR ICING
  • 1 1/2 cup icing sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon milk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Dissolve yeast in Warm water.

  • Step 2: Add sugar, salt, eggs, egg yolk, 1/2 cup butter, and 1 1/2 cup flour. Mix till smooth.

  • Step 3: Add remaining flour, almonds, citron, cherries, raisins and lemon peel.

  • Step 4: Cover dough with a damp cloth, and let dough rise until doubled.

  • Step 5: Stir down batter.

  • Step 6: Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours.

  • Step 7: Turn out dough into well floured, surface and turn to coat in flour.

  • Step 8: Divide dough in half and press each half into an oval, 10x7.

  • Step 9: Spread each oval with 3 tablespoons butter.

  • Step 10: Fold each oval in half, pressing only on folded edge.

  • Step 11: Place on greased baking sheet.

  • Step 12: Beat reserved egg white with 1 tablespoon water and brush over loaf.

  • Step 13: Let rise until double.

  • Step 14: Heat oven to 375 degrees.

  • Step 15: Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Step 16: Combine all icing ingredients and mix till smooth.

  • Step 17: While bread still warm, ice loafs.
