  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 4 1/2 to 5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon instant coffee
  • 1/2 cup nuts, chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Dough:

  • Step 2: Dissolve yeast in Warm water

  • Step 3: Add milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening and 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour. Mix till smooth

  • Step 4: Add enough remaining dough to make dough easy to handle.

  • Step 5: Turn dough out onto a lightly floured, cloth covered surface and knead until smooth and elastic.

  • Step 6: Place dough in an oiled bowl, turning dough to coat in oil.

  • Step 7: Let rise, covered with a damp cloth, until doubled. approximately 1 hr.

  • Step 8: Punch down dough

  • Step 9: Shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls and dip into butter

  • Step 10: Combine sugar and coffee

  • Step 11: Roll dough balls into coffee-sugar mixture

  • Step 12: Place dough balls in a greased tube pan

  • Step 13: Let rise until doubled

  • Step 14: Bake at 375 35-40 minutes

  • Step 15: If browning too quickly, cover with aluminum foil

  • Step 16: Invert pan onto plate so syrup can drizzle over cake

  • Step 17: To serve break apart with 2 forks
