Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup water, warm
  • 3/4 cup milk, warm
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.

  • Step 2: Add milk, sugar, salt, shortening and 2 1/2 cups flour. Mix till smooth.

  • Step 3: Add remaining flour, to make a soft dough.

  • Step 4: Turn dough out onto a lightly floured, cloth covered surface and knead until smooth and elastic.

  • Step 5: Place dough in an oiled bowl, turning dough to coat in oil.

  • Step 6: Let rise, covered with a damp cloth, until doubled. approximately 1 hr.

  • Step 7: Punch down dough and divide into 24 equal pieces

  • Step 8: Shape each into a smooth ball and place in greased muffin tins or on a greased baking sheet, 3 inches apart.

  • Step 9: Cover and let dough rise until double.

  • Step 10: Preheat oven to 275 and bake 20-30 minutes. Do not allow to brown.

  • Step 11: Remove from pans and cool.

  • Step 12: Once cooled, place rolls in plastic bags or wrap in plastic. Store in fridge for several days, or freeze.

  • Step 13: Before serving brown rolls at 400F for 7-10 minutes.
