Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 packages (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup water, warm
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 4 1/2 to 5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Grease loaf pan

  • Step 2: In large bowl dissolve yeast in warm water, add caraway, sage and nutmeg

  • Step 3: Add buttermilk, 2 1/2 cups of the flour, shortening, sugar, salt, baking powder and mix until well mixed

  • Step 4: Add remaining flour, mix well. Dough should still be slightly sticky and soft

  • Step 5: Turn dough onto well floured surface and knead 5 min

  • Step 6: Roll dough into a rectangle, 18x9

  • Step 7: Roll up dough into a log, beginning at short end, press each end to seal and fold under loaf

  • Step 8: Place loaf in loaf pan, seam side down and brush with butter

  • Step 9: Let rise until double

  • Step 10: Preheat oven to 425F and bake 30-35 minutes or until golden

  • Step 11: Brush with butter and let cool
