The ingredients are:
  • 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oil (3-4 inches deep) in a fryer or pot, to 375°F.

  • Step 2: Combine 1 1/2 cup flour, and remaining ingredients in large mixing bowl

  • Step 3: Mix in remaining flour.

  • Step 4: Turn dough out onto well floured and cloth covered surface, roll to coat with flour.

  • Step 5: Gently roll dough to 3/8 inch thick and cut with doughnut cutter.

  • Step 6: Carefully slide doughnuts into hot oil and fry till golden brown on both sides.

  • Step 7: Drain on paper towel.

  • Step 8: Serve plain, sugared or frosted.
