Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 packages (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup water (warm water)
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon sage, crumbled
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 4 1/2 to 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Dissolve yeast in warm water.

  • Step 2: Add caraway seed, sage, nutmeg and mix well.

  • Step 3: Add buttermilk, 2 1/2 cups flour, shortening, sugar, baking powder, salt, and mix well.

  • Step 4: Add remaining flour and mix well. Dough should be soft and slightly sticky.

  • Step 5: Turn dough out onto well floured surface and knead 5 minute

  • Step 6: Roll dough into a 9x18 inch rectangle, and starting at the short side, roll up into a roll.

  • Step 7: Press down ends of roll to seal, and tuck ends under roll.

  • Step 8: Place roll in greased loaf pan, seam side down and cover with damp cloth. Let rise 1 hr, or until doubled.

  • Step 9: Heat oven to 425F and bake approx 35 minute Loaves should be golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
