Step 1: Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
Step 2: Preheat oven to 375F. and butter an 8-inch cake pan. Line it with a circle of parchment paper, buttered.
Step 3: Arrange some of the potato slices evenly in the bottom of the pan and sprinkle some of the onion on top; season with salt and pepper.
Step 4: Reserve 2 tablespoons of the butter and dot the onions/potatoes in pan with tiny pieces of the remaining butter.
Step 5: Repeat these layers and finish with a layer of potatoes.
Step 6: Melt remaining butter and brush over the top.
Step 7: Cover with foil and bake for 1-1 1/2 hours, until tender and golden. Let stand for 10-15 minutes, covered.
Step 8: Carefully invert potatoes onto a warmed plate and serve.
