Step 1: Slowly brown beef and onion in butter. Pour off excess fat but leave some butter.
Step 2: Add seasonings and water. If using tomatoes and mushrooms, add them.
Step 3: Cover and simmer over very low heat 1 hour or till meat is tender but not dry. If sauce gets dry, add water during cooking, ½ cup at a time.
Step 4: Add blend of flour and sour cream gradually, then stir constantly.
Step 5: Heat but do not boil.
