Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 3/4 pound beef round (or chuck beef, cut in 1/2-inch cubes)
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1/3 cup butter (or less, or 3 tablespoons oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black paper
  • 1 to 2 teaspoon paprika (good-quality Hungarian paprika)
  • 1/2 garlic clove minced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

How to Make

  • Step 1: Slowly brown beef and onion in butter. Pour off excess fat but leave some butter.

  • Step 2: Add seasonings and water. If using tomatoes and mushrooms, add them.

  • Step 3: Cover and simmer over very low heat 1 hour or till meat is tender but not dry. If sauce gets dry, add water during cooking, ½ cup at a time.

  • Step 4: Add blend of flour and sour cream gradually, then stir constantly.

  • Step 5: Heat but do not boil.
