Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR SAUCE
  • 2 yellow onions, chopped (2-inch diameter onions)
  • Green bell pepper, chopped (1/2 of 1/4-pound pepper)
  • 1 qarlic clove, minced (medium clove)
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 can (28 ounce) tomatoes (Italian-style tomatoes)
  • 1 cup water (boiling)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (OPTIONAL)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sweet basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage (cut up)
  • 3 ounces tomato paste (1/2 of 6-ounce can)
  • FOR REMAINING INGREDIENTS
  • 1/2 pound dry noodles (green spinach noodles)
  • 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1/2 pound ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese)
  • 1/2 pound Parmesan cheese, grated (freshly grated)
We recommend you get your ingredients ready before you start cooking. Once you're ready, here are the steps to making this delicious recipe

How to Make

  • Step 1: Sauté onion, green pepper, garlic in oil till transparent.

  • Step 2: Add sausage and brown fast.

  • Step 3: Add other ingredients.

  • Step 4: Cover pan and simmer VERY slowly for at least 3 hours, stirring occasionally and adding small amounts of boiling water if needed.

  • Step 5: Toward the end of the cooking time for the sauce, cook noodles in boiling salt water al dente (8 minutes). Drain well.

  • Step 6: Spread a thin layer of the sauce in the bottom of a buttered baking dish.

  • Step 7: Cover with noodles.

  • Step 8: Add a layer of mozzarella and dabs of ricotta.

  • Step 9: Add another layer of sauce, noodles, etc., till all are used, finishing with the sauce. Sprinkle top with Parmesan.

  • Step 10: Bake at 350' uncovered for 45 minutes.
