Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, whole
  • 3 cups raisins (seedless)
  • 1 teaspoon soda (in the molasses)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 to 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • FOR TOPPING
  • 1/2 pound crystallized ginger
  • 2 Tablespoons butter, for decoration

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cream butter and sugar; add eggs, beating well.

  • Step 2: Add molasses and soda , milk, and flour that has been sifted together with the spices.

  • Step 3: Beat well.

  • Step 4: Add raisins.(soaked in a cup of boiling water and

  • Step 5: 1 tablespoon brandy to get plump,not in origanal recipe but they did that back in the day)

  • Step 6: Bake in greased 8-inch tube pan at 350 F for 45-55 minutes.

  • FOR THE TOPPING

  • Step 7: Brush the top with a little butter, and garnish with overlapping slices of crystallized ginger.
