Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 pound bacon (cut into pieces, good quality double-smoked)
  • Vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 head cabbage (cored and sliced or cubed)
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup water (or low-sodium beef broth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated white sugar
  • 2 chicken bouillon cubes crushed (or granules)
  • 1 cup white beans (canned, rinsed and drained)
  • Salt
  • Ground pepper

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cook the bacon into a large pot or skillet over medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until bacon is crisp.

  • Step 2: Leave fat in skillet or remove and leave a little fat, then add cabbage, onion, sugar, salt, pepper, water and crushed bouillon cubes to the pot; cook and stir the cabbage as it cooks. Cook until tender but still crisp, about 10 - 15 minutes on medium heat.

  • Step 3: Season with salt and pepper. Mix in cooked beans until heated through. Serve.
