Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 3 tablespoons margarine
  • 1 medium yellow onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked)
  • 1 can (680 ml) tomato sauce (Hunt's brand, 2 3/4 cups)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or beef broth or water)
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt (more to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (or more if desired)
  • Cayenne pepper, pinch (to taste - optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a medium saucepan, heat the margarine over medium heat. Add in chopped onion; saute for about 3 minutes or until soft. Add in cumin, chili powder and smoked paprika; cook for a few minutes to release the flavors (stirring continuously).

  • Step 2: Add in all remaining ingredients, bring to a simmer stirring, reduce heat to low and continue simmering (uncovered) for about 45 minutes to1 hour until slightly reduced, stirring occasionally.

  • Step 3: Cool sauce to room temperature then refrigerate for 1-5 days (the longer the better).

  • NOTE this sauce freezes well
