Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 lemons, whole
  • 1/2 pound haloumi cheese (cut into 1 1/14" x 1/3" thick squares)
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (plus)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 thick (6 ounces) sliced bread (3/4' thick slices peasant or country style bread)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cut 8 thin slices from the lemons.

  • Step 2: Squeeze 2 tablespoon of juice from remainder of the lemons. Put juice in a bowl.

  • Step 3: Mash the minced garlic with the salt & 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

  • Step 4: Add sugar, mash together well..Whisk in the oil.

  • Step 5: Toss each slice of lemon with 1/2 tablespoon of garlic/oil dressing.

  • Step 6: Brush the bread slices with the remaining 2 tablespoons oil.

  • Step 7: In a large skillet over medium heat fry the bread, fry the cheese & lemon slices.

  • Step 8: Turn once to cook both sides of the bread, cheese & lemon slices.

  • Step 9: When you turn the cheese use a metal spatula to scrape under the cheese to loosen before turning.

  • Step 10: Serve with the lemon slices along side the cheese.

  • Step 11: Suck on the lemon slices they are so tart & good.
