  • 1/2 cup butter (cold and cut into small cubes)
  • FOR THE CRUST
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Cold water
  • FOR CHERRY FILLING
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 can (15 ounces) cherries
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 teaspoons red food coloring

How to Make

  • Step 1: Grease a 12x13 inch baking dish.

  • Step 2: Sprinkle the cold chopped butter all over in the baking dish.

  • TO MAKE THE CRUST

  • Step 3: Combine shortening and flour in a bowl and mix well. Add salt and enough cold water to make ingredients cling together. On a flat surface, roll the dough until it is thin. Cut into strips.

  • FOR THE FILLING

  • Step 4: In a bowl, combine the sugar, salt and flour. Mix well. Add the cherries, water and food coloring. Mix well and pour over butter in pan. Top with the pastry strips.

  • Step 5: Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40 minutes.
