Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3/4 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons fennel seed
  • 1 can (28 ounce) tomatoes (crushed)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 12 ounces dry penne pasta (whole-wheat, or your favorite pasta)
  • 1 pound broccoli rabe (ends trimmed and cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil (using the 1/8 teaspoon salt).

  • Step 2: Meanwhile make the sauce by heating a large skillet or pot over medium high heat. Add onion and garlic, cook stirring until for 5-10 minutes or until onion is translucent. Stir in beef and fennel seed and cook until browned (under 5 minutes). Stir in tomatoes and next 3 ingredients (-oregano) and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 10 minutes.

  • Step 3: Add pasta to boiling water and cook according to package directions; adding the broccoli rabe to the pasta water 5 minutes before pasta is done. Drain pasta and the broccoli rabe; return to pot. Add sauce and toss to mix.
