Step 1: Put the first 5 ingredients in a bowl and mix; then cut in with a pastry blender the shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 2: Add the buttermilk all at once and stir only until the dough follows the fork around the bowl.
Step 3: Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead gently to pull together about 1/2 minute; pat or roll about 1/2" thick and cut with biscuit cutter.
Step 4: Bake on ungreased sheet at 460 degrees for about 10-12 minutes.
