Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (white)
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening (I use Crisco but have used unsalted butter)
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Put the first 5 ingredients in a bowl and mix; then cut in with a pastry blender the shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Step 2: Add the buttermilk all at once and stir only until the dough follows the fork around the bowl.

  • Step 3: Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead gently to pull together about 1/2 minute; pat or roll about 1/2" thick and cut with biscuit cutter.

  • Step 4: Bake on ungreased sheet at 460 degrees for about 10-12 minutes.
