Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly coat an 8-square baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Step 2: Beat together butter, eggs, and syrup.
Step 3: Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt, and stir into butter mixture gradually. Beat with whisk until smooth fold in walnuts.
Step 4: Pour into a greased square pan and bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
Step 5: Let cool completely in pan on wire rack before frosting.
Step 6: To make frosting, Melt butter and blend in the powdered sugar. Add just enough maple syrup yo bring it to spreading consistency.
Step 7: Frost top of cake and serve.
