Step 1: Scald 1/2 cup milk; cool; add yeast; add 1 teaspoon sugar.
Step 2: Proof dough.
Step 3: Cream shortening, sugar, salt, nutmeg, and lemon rind. Add egg; mix. Add 1-1/2 cups milk. Add flour. (I needed a little more milk ).
Step 4: Knead; place in a greased bowl; let rise until doubled.
Step 5: Roll out; cut doughnuts.
Step 6: Let rise 10 minutes.
Step 7: Fry until golden in deep fat 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 8: You can shake doughnuts in sugar or glaze.
