  • 1/2 cup milk (scalded)
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons lemon rind (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Scald 1/2 cup milk; cool; add yeast; add 1 teaspoon sugar.

  • Step 2: Proof dough.

  • Step 3: Cream shortening, sugar, salt, nutmeg, and lemon rind. Add egg; mix. Add 1-1/2 cups milk. Add flour. (I needed a little more milk ).

  • Step 4: Knead; place in a greased bowl; let rise until doubled.

  • Step 5: Roll out; cut doughnuts.

  • Step 6: Let rise 10 minutes.

  • Step 7: Fry until golden in deep fat 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Step 8: You can shake doughnuts in sugar or glaze.
