Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fast-rising yeast
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 (6 ounce) apple (large apple)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup wheat germ
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • Melted butter
  • Cinnamon sugar, for dipping

How to Make

  • IF USING BREAD MACHINE

  • Step 1: Combine all ingredients except cinnamon sugar and melted butter in the order recommended by your bread machine manufacturer.

  • Step 2: Start dough cycle.

  • Step 3: When dough cycle is finished, remove dough from machine.

  • Step 4: If making by hand:

  • TO MAKE WITHOUT A BREAD MACHINE

  • Step 5: Heat the milk to 110-115 degrees.

  • Step 6: Pour on top of the brown sugar and yeast, and let it sit for 5-10min.

  • Step 7: Add oil, egg and apple.

  • Step 8: Stir flour, salt and spices together and stir into yeast mixture.

  • Step 9: Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.

  • Step 10: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled.

  • Step 11: Punch down the dough, and roll it out 1/2 inch thick.

  • FOR BOTH METHODS

  • Step 12: Preheat oven to 350° F.

  • Step 13: Divide into 14 pieces and shape into donuts (or pat out and use cutters).

  • Step 14: Place on a baking sheet and let rise 30 minutes.

  • Step 15: Bake for 15-20 minutes or until browned. and done.

  • Step 16: Immediately brush each doughnut with butter and dip in cinnamon sugar.
