  • 2 cups half and half
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 7 ounces cubed bread (4 cups day-old bread cubes about 3/4-inch cubes)
  • 1 (6 ounce) pear (ripe, peeled and diced)
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced candied ginger
  • BOURBON SAUCE (optional)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup bourbon

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter a casserole dish or baking dish.

  • Step 2: In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, half-and-half, butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

  • Step 3: Place bread cubes, pears, cranberries and ginger in a large bowl; add egg mixture. Toss to mix well.

  • Step 4: Pour bread mixture into prepared casserole dish.

  • Step 5: Bake the pudding for 45 to 60 minutes, or until set in the center.

  • Bourbon Sauce

  • Step 6: In a saucepan over medium heat, blend butter and sugar for 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and add egg yolks to the hot mixture. stirring constantly. This will cook them sufficiently.

  • Step 7: Gradually add bourbon, stirring constantly. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

  • Step 8: Spoon warm pudding into bowls and top with bourbon sauce.
