  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 16 whole cloves
  • 4 whole peeled & cored (1 1/4 pounds) apples
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (chilled then stiffly whipped)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Place sugar and water in a heavy 3- to 4-quart saucepan.

  • Step 2: Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.

  • Step 3: Insert 4 cloves in a ring around the top of each apple.

  • Step 4: Place apples side by side in the pan and baste with the syrup.

  • Step 5: Cover and reduce heat to low.

  • Step 6: Simmer, basting occasionally, 15 minutes, or until apples are tender.

  • Step 7: Let cool in syrup.

  • Step 8: Serve in individual dishes.

  • Step 9: Pile whipped cream in the center of each apple.

  • Step 10: Top with a tablespoon of the syrup.
